There is a certain irony to it, some have said.Smokers in Alexandria will have to leave local discount cigarettes stores to light up the products they just bought there. At least 25 feet from the stores to be exact, starting Jan. 1 after the Alexandria City Council passed an ordinance Oct. 4 banning smoking cigarettes in businesses previously exempt from state and local smoking cigarettes bans, including bars and buy cigarettes stores. And some tobacco users are not happy."They think the City Council way overstepped their boundaries," said Vonne Neal, owner of Alexandria's Smoke Shop." Little cigars, which are taking increasing space on area tobacco-shop shelves, are shaped and smoked just like cigarettes. But because New Jersey taxes them differently, they cost nearly one-third the price.Over the past several years, increased state and federal taxes have helped turn some smokers on to less-taxed cigarettes store products, local shop owners and anti-smoking cigarettes groups say.New Jersey has a $2.70 tax per cigarette pack, and the federal government has a $1.01 excise tax it enacted two years ago. That sixth-highest cigarette tax in the country may entice more smokers to...

Breathe deeply, especially if you’re in a favorite bar or restaurant, and enjoy the fresh, smoke-free air flowing around you. And wish a happy one-year anniversary to Wisconsin’s statewide smoking cigarettes ban.
It was a year ago Tuesday that the smoking cigarettes ban — passed by the Legislature in 2009 and signed by then-Gov. Jim Doyle — took effect in Wisconsin. Depending on one’s point of view, it’s been a wonderful year of clean air in all indoor public places, or a year of unnecessary government intervention that has harmed local businesses.
We support the “wonderful” point of view. The Tavern League of Wisconsin does not share our enthusiasm.
The league was a longtime opponent of the smoking cigarettes ban, arguing that government has no business telling bar and restaurant owners how to run their businesses. In the end, the league eventually supported the compromise effort that led to the current ban — but only because they feared the much more strict conditions put forth in earlier versions of the bill.
Even now, league president Rob Swearingen says the smoking cigarettes ban is bad state policy that has hurt local businesses. “Between the economy and the smoking cigarettes ban, there are some really sad stories out there,” he said.
The Tavern League boss said the ban “has been devastating” to his members, especially in the winter months when smokers are forced to step outside into cold conditions.
But smoking cigarettes ban advocates trumpet a year of great success and growing statewide support for this public health issue.
SmokeFree Wisconsin and the American Cancer Society released survey results last week that show 75 percent of voters support the smoking cigarettes ban, up from 69 percent before the law passed. The survey also reported 91 percent of respondents go to bars and restaurants the same or more since the smoking cigarettes ban took effect.
Even Gov. Scott Walker, a former opponent of the ban, has become a supporter.
We’re glad to see the governor’s support. Despite the league’s concerns, most businesses have adjusted fine to the new rules. And the fresh air is still a welcome treat.
