Quitting smoking cigarettes just got a little easier. For a limited time, the California Smokers' Helpline is sending callers from Nevada County free nicotine patches. Eligible cigarettes store users who call 1-800-NO-BUTTS and enroll in the free telephone-based cessation program will receive a free two-week starter kit of patches, while supplies last.The patches are an FDA-approved treatment proven to help smokers kick the habit. Most teens in Lee County are alcohol-, tobacco- and marijuana-free, according to the 2009 Teens Norms Survey.
When asked what students typically drink when they hang out with friends, 97 percent of the middle school students and 92 percent of the high school students reported something other than alcohol.
Seventy-one percent of high school students reported that they don't approve of parents who provide alcohol to students.
Other information:
- 70 percent had not had a cigarette;
- 64 percent had not had alcohol; and
- 76 percent had not had marijuana.
The anonymous September survey was taken at the following schools: Cypress Lake, Estero, East Lee County, Island Coast, Ida Baker and Bishop Verot high schools and Dunbar and Mariner middle schools.
